A trip to the north with children can be a trip with endless attractions and fun, but it can also be experiential and educational. There are quite a few places in the northern region that have historical significance, many landmarks in the country’s history that children should know about, and many museums that tell the story of the country as well as the local history.
If the trip is planned well and if one arrives with educational intentions and, of course, if a mix of activities is included, the result can be particularly enjoyable. So here are some places worth visiting.
The Railway Museum
The train as we know it today is completely different from what it was in the past. Technology has advanced, geography has changed, people have changed, and mainly, its purpose is different. One of the most special places to take children to is the Railway Museum, a museum with a glorious history and fascinating stories about what was. The railway culture, it turns out, began its journey more than 120 years ago. The museum has the carriage built for the Egyptian railway, the hydraulic diesel locomotive built for the British officers, the ambulance carriage that served the British army in World War I for transporting the wounded, and the museum has fascinating exhibits for children.
The National Maritime Museum
Another museum that can captivate children is the National Maritime Museum. This museum tells the story of the Mediterranean Sea, the history of shipping in it, and the maritime history of the area. The museum features an exhibition of sailors’ artworks, mosaics, underwater archaeological finds, and other findings and elements that can greatly interest children.
The Museum of the Fighters of the Etzel and Lehi
If we travel towards Jaffa, we can take the children to a place that is a piece of military history, an important point in the establishment of the state. This is the memorial for the fighters of the Etzel and Lehi, a memorial that expresses one of the bold operations in the history of the Jewish revival. In this operation, these underground fighters blew up the prison walls and freed dozens of Jewish prisoners, and during the breakout, 12 fighters fell, and the memorial is in their memory. The memorial is located on the Akko promenade on HaHagana Street in southwestern Akko, and this is a place where one can tell children the story of the underground movements as part of learning about the revival of the Jewish people in their land.
The Memorial to the Jewish Fighter in the Nazi Oppressor
Another important place to bring the children to and teach them about is the memorial to the Jewish fighter in the Nazi oppressor. This is a public garden designed in 1991 by artist Gershon Krisspel, featuring a Star of David embedded in a swastika and shattering it. In every broken hook, there are descriptions of types of fighting during the Holocaust, and on the edges of the Star of David, there are depictions of partisans and rebels from the Warsaw Ghetto. There is no doubt that this is another important place to stop, learn, and teach the children.
There are countless other places to visit in the northern region with children, places that are not only attractions but also points to learn a lot.
