10 Tips for Fuel-Efficient Driving – in the Carmel Tunnels and beyond…
For us, in the Carmel Tunnels Haifa, it is important that you drive efficiently. Conscious driving on toll roads and in general leads to fuel savings and significantly reduces expenses. Calm and smooth driving, along with awareness of fuel consumption, can save you up to 15% on your annual fuel consumption. It doesn’t matter if you have a large or small car, whether you are driving on a toll road or a regular road, in the city or outside of it, whether you are driving on an empty road or stuck in traffic, use these tips and see how you cover the same distance – using less fuel.
*All of the above is provided as a public service and does not obligate the Carmel Tunnels or the Carmelton Company.
1. Turn off the engine – an engine running “idle” while stopped wastes a lot of fuel. If you need to wait in the car for more than a minute, turn off the engine and save fuel.
2. Save electricity – using electrical accessories increases fuel consumption. Turn off the rear window heater after the window has been defrosted as well as the fog lights or any other electrical accessory that is not needed.
3. Maintain a low RPM – sudden accelerations consume twice as much fuel as gradual acceleration. Press the gas pedal lightly and it is recommended not to exceed 3,000 RPM when driving on flat roads.
4. Anticipate the traffic lights – look ahead at the approaching traffic light and if it is red – ease off the gas and let the car ‘glide’ gradually to a complete stop, which will save you both fuel and brake wear.
5. Maintain speed – in any case, the recommended speed for fuel-efficient driving is 80-90 km/h on roads that allow these speeds. Excessive speed consumes a larger amount of fuel.
6. Plan your trip – consolidate several tasks into one trip and reduce driving time and the number of weekly trips. This way you will save fuel and time, and reduce the accumulated wear on the vehicle. Adhering to a day of errands or a concentrated meeting day once a week can lead to significant savings in annual fuel consumption.
7. Weight – get rid of excess weight in the trunk. Excess cargo in the car increases the engine’s effort and thus raises fuel consumption.
8. Drive calmly – try to maintain a steady and calm driving pace. If your car is equipped with cruise control, you can set the speed and take your foot off the gas, without ‘pumping’ fuel unnecessarily and inefficiently.
9. Fuel – refuel your car on a “self-service” route. The shekels you save on each refueling will accumulate to significant savings over the year. Refuel your car on weekdays and during the station’s operating hours. This way you will save money on the Sabbath rate or night service.
10. Check tire pressure – tires that are not inflated according to the manufacturer’s instructions can increase fuel consumption by 10%, make sure to inflate the tires to the level specified by the manufacturer and save on fuel and tire wear.
